If you feel like spending your holidays in Sicily this year, know that summer is the perfect time to organize a trip to the Valley of the Temples, a place where history and nature enhance each other, creating a unique atmosphere. Today, we will tell you about the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, including the opening hours.
Enter the valley and savor the wonderful landscape of inland Sicily with its awakening nature, breathing in the charm of history, immersing yourself among the Greek columns, and experiencing the enchantment of one of the most beautiful archaeological and cultural heritage sites in the world.
The Valley of the Temples has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and is one of the largest archaeological complexes in the Mediterranean region. The 1,300 hectares of the park preserve an unforgettable monumental and scenic heritage, including the remains of the ancient city of Akragas, magnificently extending to the sea.
In this vast area stand the ten best-preserved temples, all dedicated to the deities of Magna Graecia. Here you will find the temples of Hera (burned in 406 BC by the Carthaginians), the temple of Concordia, Dionysius, Heracles, Zeus, Asclepius, the temple of Hephaestus, Demeter, and Isis. These temples represent the most important examples of sacred Doric architecture that have come down to us.
Good signage will lead you to other highly important remains preserved within the archaeological area, such as the tomb of Theron, three sanctuaries, several necropolises, the Kolymbethra garden, and the fortifications that are part of a Hellenistic-Roman district.
Interestingly, you don’t need special equipment to visit the archaeological park. You just need a map, a camera, and comfortable shoes to walk long distances without discomfort. The area is easily accessible and affordable by car or public transport.
