Palermo electric scooter: how it works and which app to download

What are the rules regarding electric scooters? In recent years, this mode of transportation has gained popularity, especially in large cities, becoming one of the most commonly used.

Electric Scooter Rules in Palermo

Starting with the rules, rental is currently prohibited for anyone under 14 years old. Additionally, the rider cannot transport any passengers, only themselves. Helmets are mandatory for those between 14 and 18 years old, while for adults, wearing a helmet is recommended but not obligatory. Of course, users must always comply with road regulations and the Highway Code, and they should park in designated areas for bicycles and scooters. Finally, pedestrians always have the right of way, and riding on sidewalks is not allowed.

Following the trend of other major cities, Palermo has decided to provide electric scooters for sharing services. Initially, the cost will be 1 euro for the first fifteen minutes.

How the App Works

Once you understand the general rules, it’s important to know that to use an electric scooter, you need to install an application. Specifically, we are talking about the Bird app, which shows all the available scooters nearby, located via GPS tracking. Before starting the ride, the user provides payment information, enters their personal details, scans the QR code on the scooter, and begins the rental.

At the end of the ride, the user must take a photo of the parked scooter to confirm the end of the trip. The ride cost is then charged to the provided credit card. If the scooter is found to be non-functional, it can be reported through the app.
