In today’s article, we want to discuss the distance between Palermo Airport and Cefalů, as well as all the useful connections, especially if you are on vacation in Cefalů and need all the relevant information.
First, let’s talk about the history of Palermo–Punta Raisi International Airport, known simply as Punta Raisi Airport. It is an Italian airport administratively part of the municipality of Cinisi, located near the metropolitan city of Palermo. The airport is situated in Punta Raisi, 35 km west of Palermo along State Road 113 Settentrionale Sicula, and 99 km from the town of Cefalů. In 2022, it was the third busiest airport in Southern Italy in terms of passenger traffic, after Naples and Catania, and the ninth overall in Italy.
The airport is named in memory of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, two renowned and beloved Italian magistrates who were killed by the mafia in 1992. As mentioned above, it is the ninth busiest airport in Italy by passenger numbers, and there are significant expansion and modernization operations planned. The Palermo airport management company has developed a development plan that includes funding aimed at increasing security at the terminal, expanding the current boarding area to 15,000 square meters, 10,000 square meters for commercial areas, as well as expanding the second runway with 7,000 parking spaces and new access roads to the airport.
In the summer of 2016, the new arrivals atrium was inaugurated along with the airport management company’s office building. In May 2017, almost a year later, the third check-in hall was inaugurated, and in October, work began on refurbishing the runways.
What is the distance from Palermo Airport to Cefalů? Here are the connections
If coming from the city by car, it is advisable to take the A29 motorway towards Mazara del Vallo, exiting at the “Aeroporto Falcone e Borsellino” junction and following the signs. For those without a car, the airport can also be reached by train via the Trinacria Express service, which connects the city of Palermo directly with the airport in less than an hour. The train ticket costs €6.50. From June 2015, the rail service was suspended for the doubling and undergrounding of the tracks for the airport-Palermo Notarbartolo line.
The route was reactivated on October 7, 2018, and in the very recent summer of 2023, the Genio Express was inaugurated, a direct train from Palermo to Punta Raisi with a single intermediate stop at Notarbartolo, covering the entire route in 34 minutes.
However, it is important to note that there are no direct connections from Palermo Airport to the city of Cefalů. Therefore, the fastest and most comfortable option remains the car rental with driver (NCC) service. Alternatively, from the airport, you need to reach the central train station (which is right next to the bus station) and then continue to Cefalů by train or bus.
