Arenella is the fifty-fourth Primo Livello Unit of Palermo, which is part of the VII District. It hosts two marinas that were historically dedicated to fishing activities: Arenella Port and Acquasanta Port.
In 1972, Arenella was the official venue for the third (and last) edition of Palermo Pop, one of the first rock festivals organized in Italy. Arenella is located on the northern coast of the beautiful Sicilian capital and extends to the foot of the rocky promontory of Monte Pellegrino, just below the spur of Pizzo della Selva.
Arenella-Vergine Maria is a seaside neighborhood of Palermo, developed around the Tonnara Florio in the 19th century. Today, it’s a popular spot for those who want to spend a day at the beach.
The beach in this neighborhood consists of small pebbles and fairly fine sand with a distinctive golden color. The beach is washed by turquoise to light blue waters, which are clear and crystalline, with a gently sloping seabed.

The excellent sun exposure certainly contributes to the great success of this Arenella beach, where you can sunbathe from the early hours of the morning until late afternoon. Firstly, the most notable architectures within the UPL remain the same, and we’ll discuss them here. One of the most important architectures is undoubtedly the Tonnara Florio, now partially a museum and partially a venue for receptions and special events. Its presence constitutes one of the last testimonies of Palermo’s entrepreneurial successes closely linked to the fishing economy between the 14th and 19th centuries.
Another significant architecture is the Palazzina dei Quattro Pizzi, one of the finest examples of neo-Gothic style in the entire province. Both these buildings testify to a part of the dynastic history of the renowned Florio family.
Interestingly, near the beach, there are also two charming tourist marinas, and there are many welcoming places where you can have a tasty aperitif or enjoy excellent local dishes. But how do you get to the Arenella-Vergine Maria beach if you are in the center of Palermo? Just take the SS113 northbound, which leads directly to the village of Arenella.
